MY FRIEND, “EXPERIENCE”

My husband and mother-in-law both advised me to follow the “Farmer’s Almanac” planting guide based on frost dates. I even have a printed copy of it. I’m pleased to announce the kale, romaine and broccoli are doing great because they prefer cooler temperatures. Tomato and pepper plants, not so much.

They looked so strong and healthy at the nursery. So, in my impatience, I planted the young seedlings without really paying attention to the “Farmers” wisdom.  Seedlings shouldn’t be planted in east TN until the beginning of May. Despite covering them when frost was predicted, they died.  With sadness, I removed the brown, lifeless remains.

Nope, I won’t repeat this experience. I will consult and follow the planting guide. Those who put it together probably learned through experience also. I’m grateful for other’s expertise, guiding me to plant a more successful garden.

I’ve found, the writer’s experience in the book of Proverbs gives brilliant recommendations for a successful life. This wisdom packed text explains what to plant in my heart and mind. It demonstrates how to nurture this wisdom with action. Finally, the instructions predict a healthy outcome for one’s physical body.

Many times, I’ve failed to follow the directions of Proverbs, and well, the outcome wasn’t so great. The experience reminds me not to repeat these mistakes. I return to the instruction manual and do better. Because, I ask the One who inspires my training, the Holy Spirit, to help me. And He is faithful to do it!

Pay attention, my child, to what I say. Listen carefully. Don’t lose sight of my words. Let them penetrate deep within your heart, for they bring life and radiant health to anyone who discovers their meaning. Above all else, guard your heart, for it affects everything you do.(NLT: Proverbs 4: 19 – 23)
