SING AND BE WELL

Ten days ago, I did something different during my 2-day drive to TN. Instead of using the drive time to catch up with phone calls, I sang my favorite genre of songs on Pandora. And yes, sometimes I glanced at the phone to know the encouraging words better.

Sensing a shift in the world as I’ve known it, my mind and spirit needed a reminder of Way Maker’s promises. My physical body needed the immune boosting light from the Miracle Worker to push away dark thoughts.

The highly contagious Coronavirus greatly challenges the respiratory system. This is some of the good stuff we know about singing and health – it strengthens the immune system, increases lung capacity through the exercise of singing, helps with sleep, is a natural anti-depressant, relaxes stressed muscles and improves mental alertness.

The quality of your voice doesn’t hinder the benefits of singing. Now, the quality of the words you sing might. Upbeat, life giving words spoken and sung bring life giving health to body, mind and spirit. Much like the benefits of walking through a tall forest, seeing the sun glinting off the spring daffodils and hearing the gurgling of the mountain brook.

For no cost, you can make your own YouTube playlist with your genre of choice. My favorites are Bethel, Hillsong, Passion, and Shane & Shane worship songs. Your favorites are probably different. But, engaging in upbeat singing carries the same wellness formula for all.

I’ve included this YouTube link to inspire you. It’s Elevation Worship doing the song Waymaker. Just click on the link to listen.

Enjoy and be well!

Shout with joy to the LORD, O earth!  Worship the LORD with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy…. For the LORD is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation. (NLT: Psalms 100: 1 & 6)
