I heard a thud and then saw the small blue finch lying on the concrete just outside the sliding glass door. Hitting the glass, the bird must have been terribly stunned and then fell 5 feet to the ground.
Opening the door, I saw one wing flutter and then the other. Next, the bird turned on its back with its feet in the air. It lay motionless. I cried, “Nooo! You can’t die!”
Dropping to my knees, I gently turned the bird right side up and began stroking the soft feathers covering its back. Maybe, without realizing, I was resuscitating this creature. I called on divine intervention. “God, breathe life.”
This fragile body began to breathe rapidly. “Thanks Father. Please restore completely.” Now that the bird was breathing, I figured rest was needed.
Thirty minutes later I knelt beside the finch offering a soufflé cup of water. With ease, the bird rose up and flew to nearby tree branches. I was relieved and thankful. Love in action helped protect and restore life to the beautiful finch.
Who wouldn’t have done the same? Who wouldn’t have recognized a fragile life in need of protection and care? So that’s why it’s hard for me to support the action of abortion.
Check it out. The unborn child’s heart begins beating at 6 weeks. The infant responds to touch at 8 weeks. At 20 weeks the child’s pain receptors are fully functional. This unborn child is a person needing protection and time to freely fly from its developmental nest of protection.
We grieve the way we mistreat our planet. We grieve rape, abuse, prejudice, animal cruelty and poverty. Why don’t we grieve abortion? Past cultures sacrificing their young to the gods of the world didn’t last long or fare well.
Why are so many willing to conveniently dispose of a precious life for the sake of freedom? I couldn’t ignore the dying finch. I can’t ignore the loveless action of abortion. Can you?
I’ve family and friends who have aborted a child, so I understand. Like them, you can receive God’s forgiveness and forgive yourself. We’re all imperfect needing His merciful freedom from accusing thoughts of guilt, shame and resentment. God’s compassionate and kind, wanting you to receive His pardoning embrace.
At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit… When you came in and greeted me, my baby jumped for joy the instant I heard your voice! (NLT: Luke 1: 41, 44)
Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him. (NLT: Psalms 127: 3)
But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong. (NLT: 1 John 1: 9)
