A MOTHER’S DAY REFLECTION

Seems silly, remembering my parent’s care more since they died than when they were alive. Holidays, such as Mother’s Day, seem to trigger those reflections. I guess there’s some truth to the notion we don’t really appreciate what we have until what we have is gone.

Mom and Dad raised us with few words, demonstrating hard work, and respect for family and authority. There weren’t a lot of hugs or words of affirmation. But their love was evident with time taken to be with us, promoting the strengths they saw in us.

Observing them praying, reading God’s words and seeking His guidance was the best gift they gave us. There was little doubt they valued God in their lives and wanted the same for us.

Early adulthood brought me to the realization I might have above average intelligence. One day I asked my Mom, “Did I ever have any IQ testing in my school years? And if so, what did it show?”

Her answer, “Yes you did and yes the testing showed you qualified for all those advanced classes you were put in. Your Dad and I didn’t discuss it with you because we thought pride might enter in. We probably should’ve celebrated our children’s talents with more words.”

I suspect more words of affirmation, spoken to me as a child, would have helped my confidence level without danger of pride. But as a parent and grandparent myself, none of us do parenting perfect.

Mom and Dad are gone now. Their greatest gift lives on in me. As I listen, my heavenly Father speaks words of affirmation, love and direction over me daily. God’s relentless love and truth is healing the regrets, wrong choices and disappointments in my life.

The more time I spend with Him, the greater joy, health and confidence I experience. Father’s favor is evident daily in the many little things He does for me. Better than that, He always has time to listen as an ever-present companion.

Your throne is founded on two strong pillars–righteousness and justice. Unfailing love and truth walk before you as attendants. Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, LORD. They rejoice all day long in your wonderful reputation. They exult in your righteousness. You are their glorious strength. Our power is based on your favor.  (NLT: Psalms 89: 14 – 17)
