THEY’RE LISTENING, WATCHING AND LEARNING

Without an identity anchored in unconditional love, both young and old can be insecure, self-focused and sometimes angry. I saw it in Braden’s eyes when I asked,“Do you know God loves you?”

“I was baptized Catholic, does that count?” replied Braden, barely old enough to have fuzz on his chin. “So, do you talk to God?” I asked. Thoughtfully he replied, “I believe there’s a God but I don’t really think about it.”

Curious about Braden, I asked, “Do you and your Dad talk much?”  With derision he replied, “My Dad? He really has no interest in me. He’s cheated on my mom, doesn’t pay child support and probably will go to prison soon.”

Gently I responded, “I’m sorry your father has been such a disappointment.  Do you have a good man in your life you can talk with?”  “I have friends and my mom,” said Braden.

I suggested, “God’s about a relationship, not about a religion. He loves you and has a good plan for your life.   He’ll help you find your way, if you ask Him.”

Resolutely Braden replied, “I’m O.K. I don’t think about that stuff much.”

Behaviors and beliefs are learned through observation and practice.  Our kids, family, friends, co-workers and neighbors are listening to our messages and watching our actions.

Do we keep our promises, love unconditionally, and honestly conduct our business?  The Braden’s in this world are listening, watching and learning. Most likely they will repeat what they hear and see.

Follow God’s example in everything you do, because you are his dear children.Live a life filled with love for others, following the example of Christ, who loved you and gave himself as a sacrifice to take away your sins. And God was pleased, because that sacrifice was like sweet perfume to him. (NLT: Ephesians 5: 1 – 2)
