WISDOM’S VOICE WHEN I HURT

I really don’t want to. I’ve got a long list of things needing to be accomplished.” Wisdom replied, “If you take time to rest with me this morning and write a few words, you and others will receive a blessing.“

Heeding this advice, I did rest. As I rested, I expressed thanks for good health, stamina to continue weekly exercise and conviction to eat clean foods. Then my thoughts drifted to those dear to me who are in pain, poor health and struggling to live happy lives.

I will apologize right now. I’m sorry, but 40 years of nursing assessments are to blame. I sometimes look at human beings, assessing skin color, turgor, breathing habits, gait and build. These clues and many others can be fuel for my prayers.

Compassion is what drives those prayers for others well-being. When my physical self is uncomfortable, my thoughts can be distracted, grumpy, discouraged and in many other negative places.

When I’m more comfortable, I can rest peacefully, meditate, exercise, and join in fun and conversation. I can better hear wisdom’s still small voice encouraging, guiding my day. Life becomes filled with more good stuff.

Through trial and error, I’ve found my own determination doesn’t enable long-term practice of healthy habits. It’s day-by-day reliance on my Maker’s words of encouragement. His words relieve my pains and give strength to practice healthy habits.

My 2018 prayers include all who are in pain. May you hear his words of wisdom, seek his prescription for healing and know life and health for your whole person.

Don’t lose sight of my words. Let them penetrate deep within your heart, for they bring life and radiant health to anyone who discovers their meaning.   Above all else, guard your heart, for it affects everything you do. (NLT: Proverbs 4: 21 – 23)
