The four of us siblings always had a place at the family table. Even as adults, we were welcomed, no matter what storms were brewing in the family. This sense of belonging was a truth we could rely on, a testament to our parents’ unconditional love for us.
Josh McDowell’s definition of knowing truth is “Fidelity to the original.” Our parents, the origin of us kids, raised us to love, forgive, and get along no matter what. The four of us remain loyal to our parent’s example of truth by gratefully enjoying time together despite living miles apart.
Mom and Dad knew the original Truth Giver. God’s word showed them we all came into this world messed up and they chose to turn to Jesus for blood-bought forgiveness. I caught these truths through their teaching and example, recognizing my need for a loving and forgiving Savior. I’ve chosen to trust and obey God’s truths, become part of His family and sit at His table. (Ephesians 2:1-7)
Why is the Lord God most high the original? In the beginning, He created heaven and earth; through Adam and Eve, He made you and me. If He’s our originator, shouldn’t we want to be loyal to Him and His truths? He created us because He wished to enjoy our company for eternity. Mom and Dad are now enjoying God’s company and abundance forever.
God desires to give His creation eternal and abundant life. “The thief’s purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy. My purpose is to give life in all its fullness. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (NLT: John 10: 10 – 12) Why wouldn’t we want to be loyal to Him? His Spirit is freely given to guide and empower us when we surrender to Him and say no to serving the thief.
Those choosing to serve the thief through prideful, self-serving lives, seemingly don’t want to sit at the Lord’s table for eternity. You say, ‘But I don’t choose any of that crazy behavior!’ That’s great news!! Then you will loyally seek His will for your life, His words of truth, obey them through His Spirit’s help and teach them to your kids. Then, thankfully, we all will sit at His table for eternity.
