ALL AUTHORITY

Telling your CEO no is usually not a good idea, if you want to keep your job. What would make me resist the authority of a supervisor? As described in the last blog, it had to do with speaking and doing the wise thing.

For years I have said to those drivers who appear to be pulling out in front of me, “Don’t do it.” They can’t hear me but most of the time they don’t pull out in front of me. I have learned that spoken words have an effect, either positive or negative, as I say them with authority and belief in what I’m saying is true.

I’ve realized some of my worst fears when thinking and speaking those fears but I’ve realized some great hopes and dreams because I’ve dared to speak them with authority and walk forward believing they would happen.

Last year I foolishly left my new laptop with briefcase in the waiting area at the airport and didn’t discover my error until hours after I left the airport. Devastated, I cried out to the highest authority I knew and begged for mercy and grace. Sensing reassurance, I began to think and speak with authority the return of my computer.

The loss was reported to the local law enforcement. My computer and myself were assigned a detective. After the kind detective took all my information, I encouraged him with, “I’ve prayed for you to look in the right place at the right time and you will find my computer. You’re not on this case alone. You’re being given divine wisdom and authority.” He responded with surprised appreciation for the encouragement.

The detective and myself communicated with e-mails in the following weeks discussing facts, clues and possibilities. During this time I continued to declare, “I’m getting my computer back.” Guilt and shame often threatened to undermine that belief but I held on to the truth impressed upon me by my wise loving authority.

My electric toothbrush was also left in my computer briefcase. About a month after losing the computer, the detective phoned lightheartedly saying, “I’ve got your toothbrush!” Words cannot express my incredible joy and thankfulness as I realized he was telling me he had my toothbrush and computer, whole and unharmed.

For me, every day is an opportunity to make this choice, “Do I consult the highest authority of wisdom available and follow him or listen to and follow other voices?” Following the voice of the highest authority doesn’t always look good or feel good but I’m learning that choosing what looks and feels good can turn out poorly. My character and trust is growing as I experience things working out when I ask, listen patiently, obey and declare, expecting a positive outcome!

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth. Matt. 28:18 NLT

Though the enemy surrounded me, I destroyed them all with the authority of the Lord. Psalm 118:10 NLT
